The series is an adaptation of the novel, A Married Woman, written by Manju Kapur. Although it belongs to the romance genre, it is slightly different from other typical romance genre series. The show focusses on the development of a relationship between Astha , and Piplika – two women who have experienced trials in previous relationships, and have decided to succumb to the comfort of their friendship. This leads to them falling in love with each other in a quiet, yet, meaningful way.

In the background of the story there is a political conflict that relates the Babri Masjid situation of 1992. In the midst of this situation, rife with communal tensions, and distrust, Astha , and Piplika find each other, and get involved in an unconventional relationship. This relationship would break the barriers of societal pressure, political impositions, and ideals of love for the two characters, as they would get further, and further involved with each other in a quiet, and supportive relationship.

The narrative of the series follows the story of Astha who is a woman from Delhi, raised in a middle-class household. She is a quiet, and simple woman who is her parents’ obedient child, giving in to them making decisions for her life. In such a fashion, she agrees to get married to her husband through a typical arranged marriage, as decider by her parents. Following her marriage, she lives a simple life in which she is a teacher, and a mother of two children. However, she has always felt her life to be incomplete.

In the midst of the rising communal tensions, she meets Piplika who is a widowed woman following her husband’s death in the riots of Ayodhya. Astha, who was an admirer of Piplika’s activist husband, finds herself getting drawn to her, and experiencing the completeness she had been missing throughout her marriage. This consequently leads to a passionate affair between the two women, despite Astha’s marriage.

Through this affair, the two women find comfort, and solace with each other in an unsafe, and divisive environment. Moreover, they come to their self-actualisation, knowing their identities, and their affinities. However, in 1992, this self-actualisation wouldn’t come to a long-term fruition as both women are aware of the realities of their respective situations, and the obstacles between them, imposed by society.

In general, the series is a period piece featuring a relationship that is unconventional, and beautiful – that enables two women to briefly, and blissfully be themselves with no fears of being persecuted.
